Panel Recap PS26: Strengthening International Dialogue for Safe Data Flows

SCOPE EuropeEU Cloud CoCNews

We had the pleasure of hosting a panel at this year's Privacy Symposium "Beyond Borders: Strengthening International Dialogue for Safe Data Flows" — covering one of the most persistent and pressing topics in data protection: international data transfers.

We were joined by Karolina Mojzesowicz, Deputy Head of Unit, Data Protection, DG JUSTICE at the European Commission; Koen Gorissen, President of the Belgian Data Protection Authority; and Nathaly Rey, Director of Global Regulatory Response at Google Cloud. The discussion was moderated by Gabriela Mercuri, Managing Director at SCOPE Europe.

Drawing on a mix of regulatory, policymaker and industry perspectives, the panellists dived into the complexities of implementing the GDPR in a fragmented and fast-moving landscape. The discussion ranged from the challenges facing regulators and organisations on the ground, to the broader efforts underway to improve harmonisation and reduce legal uncertainty.

The discussion also explored existing and future efforts to address fragmentation and advance harmonisation — with particular attention to the role of tools already embedded in the GDPR, such as codes of conduct and certifications, as underutilised but promising instruments for enabling secure and scalable data flows.

We are grateful to the speakers for their contributions and look forward to continuing these conversations.
