As GDPR completes 6 years of applicability, the EU Cloud CoC celebrates its 3rd approval anniversary

SCOPE EuropeEU Cloud CoCNews

In a symbolic month for the privacy and cloud communities, the EU Cloud CoC reaches the third-year mark since it has received a positive opinion by the EDPB and was approved by the Belgian Data Protection Authority.

Since becoming the first legally operational European-wide code of conduct under the GDPR, the EU Cloud CoC has been consistently advancing robust technical and organizational measures across the entire cloud environment (XaaS). The EU Cloud CoC General Assembly, alongside SCOPE Europe as the Code’s Secretariat and Monitoring Body, is thrilled to reach this third year while witnessing the continuous growth, impact, and dissemination of this lighthouse initiative.

As May 2024 also marks 6 years since GDPR became applicable, and as we expect some crucial developments in the field – such as the upcoming European Commission’s Report on the  GDPR – this is an important occasion to reflect on the milestones achieved so far, as well as on the persistent challenges that can undermine the protection of data subjects and their fundamental rights.

Against this backdrop, as a pioneering initiative that has built a unique experience in this domain, the EU Cloud CoC community is committed to leveraging its expertise to meaningfully support the optimization of GDPR implementation within and beyond the cloud computing landscape.  In this spirit, the Code’s General Assembly is also eager to continue its work on the development of further compliance solutions, including in the realm of international data transfers, with the Third Country Module Initiative.

On a final note, we  would like to take this opportunity to toast to all of the stakeholders who have contributed to this journey, to all the members and partners whose significant contributions were indispensable to the Code’s success, and to the more than 1.400 services that have gone through the adherence process. Our community is more than eager to continue in its mission and looks forward to seeing what the next years have in store for us.
